Hiking is is the hands-down the best way to get up close and personal with Southern Humboldt County’s magnificent giant redwoods — and a versatile activity perfect for everyone from seasoned backpackers to families with young kids.

Redwoods Trails

Beginner trails abound in Humboldt Redwoods State Park: Take the popular Founder’s Grove Nature Trail or Rockefeller Loop Trail, both gentle paths through some of the most impressive redwood groves in the park and conveniently located near Highway 101. Other highly-rated easy hikes include the Stephens Grove Loop Trail, Bull Creek Loop, and (when the Eel River is low enough to bridge) the Childrens Forest Trail, among many others.

For more moderate treks, consider the Hidden Springs Trail or Williams Grove Trail. Experienced hikers can try the strenuous Grasshopper Mountain Trail (also a good spot for mountain biking) which offers 360-degree views of the forested mountains and river below. Keep an eye out for black bears and other wildlife.

Lost Coast Trail

Few coastline hikes offer the solitude of the 25-mile Lost Coast Trail which stretches from Shelter Cove to the south and the Mattole River to the north, accessible from May through October.
